A 20-year Russian law student is starting a one-woman movement to stop ‘manspreading’ on the St.Petersburg metro-by spraying bleach on the offenders’ nether regions.
Anna Dovgalyuk, aged 20, has deemed these men spreading their legs as an act of ‘gender aggression‘, and insists that Russian society has not done enough to rid itself of this problem.
She defines manspreading as such: “The habit of some men to sit widely with their legs spread in the subway and other public transportation, this way taking up more than one [seat]”.
The original YouTube clip was removed due to multiple reports of bullying and harassment. Here is an alternative video:
When she detects men guilty of the crime, she proceeds to pour a mixture of water and bleach on their groins . Anna warns that the solution is “30 times more concentrated than the mixture used by housewives when doing the laundry” and that it “eats colours in the fabric in a matter of minutes-leaving an indelible stain”.
Anna refers to herself as a social activist, looking to leave “identification spots” that will force people to “immediately understand which body part controls the behaviour of these men”. The student claims to be acting in solidarity with everyone “who has to endure the manifestations of you declaring your macho qualities on public transportation”.
According to Russian media outlet Rosbalt, the video stunt is fake. However, Anna is insistent that her stunt is “absolutely real” and has been keen to spread her stunt on social media.

This is my new video manifesto, dedicated to the problem of manspreading. The disgusting act that is being fought with around the world and it is hushed up in us. Men demonstrating their alpha-manhood in the subway with women and children around, deserve contempt. If you publicly show what kind of macho you are, we will publicly cool you off! This video manifesto was created in assistance with friends who share my position.
Though the activist may be content with the attention she has received, not everyone is supportive of her stunt. Some have referred to it as a blatant example of physical assault and have deemed it unacceptable behaviour.
This is not activism, this is not campaigning, this is ASSAULT!!! Even if the video is set up it’s still outrageous and I hope it doesn’t inspire copycat behaviour! #manspreading https://t.co/1tkDr2kvWh

As of yet, however, has Anna been sued by any of the men affected by her video stunt. She adds: “I don’t think people are going to go to the police to file a report about jeans”.
This is not her first appearance in the daily news cycle. She has made headlines in the past for flashing her undergarments to commuters while protesting Russian upskirting laws.
