In this video a pastor claims that those who fail to donate 10% of their income to the church are robbing God.
The pastor begins by referencing a piece of Malachai scripture from the Old testament in which God reprimands the Levites for not donating to the priests at the temple of Jerusalem.
“You are robbing me of both tithes and offerings. A tithe is 10%”
The pastor claims that this so-called “tithe” should amount to 10% of your income. He claims that if you use your current state of debt as an excuse to forgo on your offerings, you are saying that God’s a liar. His idea is that God will take care of you if you show him signs of faith.
“If you want to get out of debt, give God 10%”
While this is a common practice in the Jewish faith, these passages of Malachai scripture from the Hebrew Bible are often said to not apply to New Testament Christians, whom this pastor is addressing.
Many in the comment section of the video were keen to point the strong possibility the pastor is exploiting his following for financial gain. However, many were also keen to defend his intention to help his following solidify their faith in God through offerings.
