Kim Kardashian and Kanye West met with Uganda’s President Yoweri K. Museveni, and gifted the 74 year old a pair of white Yeezy boost 350 sneakers.
Kanye and Kim headed on a family vacation to East Africa over the weekend with their five year old daughter North to visit Uganda’s national parks.
The superstar couple then met with the president and discussed issues about tourism, and examined possibilities to promote Ugandan arts. The president tweeted about his meeting and thanked Kanye and Kim for their visit.
I welcome American entertainment stars Kanye West and @KimKardashian to Uganda. I held fruitful discussions with the duo on how to promote Uganda’s tourism and the arts. ‘I welcome American entertainment stars Kanye West and Kim Kardashian to Uganda. I held fruitful discussions with the duo on how to promote Uganda’s tourism and the arts.’
‘I thank Kanye for the gift of white sneakers. Enjoy your time in Uganda. It is the true Pearl of Africa,’ he said.
According to BBC news, Museveni gave the couple Ugandan names in honour of the occasion.
Kanye was named “Kanyesigye” which means “I trust,” and Kim was named “Kemigisha” which means “the one with blessings from God.”
Following their meeting with the president, the couple met with a group of children and handed out several pairs of the white Yeezys.
As Kanye and Kim approached the group, the children can be seen dancing and singing from excitement, with Kanye wearing a neon yellow shirt and shorts, and a baseball cap.
Later in the video we see Kim and Kanye unzipping several large duffel bags filled with Yeezy boost 350 sneakers, which they handed over to the children.
The couple received a lot of backlash after they posted the video to Instagram for making this whole “stunt” about themselves.
One person said on social media:“So Kim and Ye are giving poor kids in Uganda fresh new white Yeezys instead of new clothes and food? Or why are they not rather bettering their environment such as building a school???”
Another tweeted: “Kanye in Uganda seems like the most disingenuous, exploiting and looking for praise PR stunt I’ve ever seen. Him and Kim putting their iPhones in kids’ faces and showing off their ‘generosity’ of giving Yeezy’s just seems so forced!”
A third tweet reads: “Damn Ye we actually believed in you and cared enough about you to say there’s a point to what your doing. But now we know it’s all for publicity. Yours fans are running away and pretty soon you’ll be extra lonely at the top. We gave up on you because you gave up on us #Lost”
Some, however, did praise the couple for taking time out of their busy lives to meet with the local children.
One tweeted: “Ok so all I could do is smile watching @KimKardashian & @kanyewest bring the children of Uganda Yeezys. My heart is so full.”
Earlier this week, Kanye met with president Trump where the two sat down in the Oval Office and discussed issues about prison reform and urban revitalization. During the discussion, Kanye gave credit to president Trump for giving him “the heart to go to Adidas.”
“This Adidas thing made me a billionaire,” West adds.
Kanye and Kim are currently relaxing in East Africa, and Ye is said to be recording ‘Yandhi,’ his ninth album in a ‘tent’ in Uganda.
